What is a Crypto Hardware Wallet?
What is a crypto hardware wallet?
A crypto hardware wallet is a place to store your cryptocurrency offline. It is a tangible product that secures your crypto where hackers can’t steal it from you.
Just like the bank stores your fiat money in its vault, a hardware wallet is a vault that you hold in your hand. There are many ways of storing your crypto, like on an exchange but the problem with an exchange holding your crypto is that if the exchange ever gets hacked (it has happened in the past), hackers can steal your money.
You can store your crypto on a software wallet like one on your phone or Metamask on your browser. As they are better than the exchange because there is more security, but they are still connected to the internet, which opens them up to vulnerabilities. The wallets on your phone are good until you lose your phone, or worse, someone steals it.
With a hardware wallet, your crypto is stored on the blockchain, and the hardware wallet is the key to the vault.
With a hardware wallet and software wallet, you get a seed phrase (12 or 24-word phrase) that will allow you to recover your wallet if it gets lost, stolen or breaks. Once this happens to the hardware wallet, you can buy another wallet and take those same words to recover your crypto. So it goes without saying (but I will)
***NEVER LOSE THE SEED PHRASE OR LET ANYONE SEE IT***
It’s the key to your personal vault.
Now that you know what a hardware wallet is and know the importance of owning one, let me tell you about the top 3 on the market right now in 2021. I have chosen the best wallet that each of the three companies offers. Because, if you’re going to store what could be millions, you want the best of the best.
So here it is…
Trezor: Model T
The Trezor Model T is the best wallet that Trezor has to offer. I currently own one, it houses all of my cryptos, and I personally love it. It is easy to use, has a large touch screen. It comes with premium support by a team that seems to be up 24/7, and from what I have researched, it has the best security on the market (at the time of writing this)
Security
You want the best security for your crypto, Here is what Trezor has to offer
Crypto
The amount and types of coins are important features on the hardware wallet because you want to be able to store all crypto on the wallet from BTC to ERC20 to TRX (these are all different blockchains)
The Model T allows you to store well over 1000 different cryptocurrencies on one device, and it has no limit on the amount of each coin. I want to list all the tokens/coins, but the list is way too long, and if you want more information about the coins that the Model T can store, please visit them here to learn more.
Ease Of Use
With a touch screen size of 240×240 pixels, it has the largest of the three wallets. So it is easy to enter the correct information into your device. With a Trezor Model T, you can get it up and running in less than 10 mins of opening the package.
Special Features
There are many special features to the Model T
- Colour touchscreen
- Password manager
- Bitcoin only firmware (extra feature)
- Shmir Backup
- U2F authentication
- FIDO2 Authentication
- Encryption via GPG
- SSH
- MicroSD Card
- Premium Support
- Designed and Built in EU (European Union)
Price
The Trezor Model T comes in as the most expensive on the list but with good reason. The extra security and the top-notch support is worth every penny for peace of mind.
The cost of the Trezor Model T costs 149 Euros (about $180USD)
What’s included:
- Trezor Model T
- Model T magnetic dock
- USB-C cable
- 2x Recovery seed card
- Trezor stickers
About The Company
Trezor is a European company, they have been around for a while now. Trezor security is top of the line, with no known breaches in data. They did experience flaws in their software but have since fixed all the issues. Trezor sells two wallets, The Trazor One and the Model T. There are a few upsells when you purchase your wallet but not necessary if you need a hardware wallet.
Ledger Nano X
At Ledger, they have two different wallets. They have the Ledger Nano S and the Nano X. The Nano X is their newer version and also the most expensive option they offer, and for a good reason. It can store more coins and tokens than the Nano S, and it comes with better features. It is twice the price, but when it comes to options for your money, the Nano X is better, and that is why I will be telling you about the Nano X.
Security
The device’s security is best in the market (according to Ledger), but there isn’t much information on their site about the wallet’s safety; this is what I found.
- Certified for its security by ANSSI, The French cybersecurity agency
- Integrates a secure element (SE)
- Secure Element is rated CC EAL5+.
- A dual-core MCUs with wireless support (STM32WB55)
There is some information about the security of the device. It is secured from what I have read as it holds the seed and keys on the hardware itself. The device can be connected to Bluetooth to transfer funds, but it does require you to confirm the transfer; you can also turn off the Bluetooth capability.
In late 2020 Ledgers database was breached, and hackers stole the information of about 250,000 customers. The hackers stole addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and credit card numbers. As for the wallets, they say there was no breach.
With that said, the hackers contacted many of Ledgers customers with death threats and other threats if people didn’t give them bitcoin in exchange.
Crypto
The Ledger Nano X can house 100 crypto applications and over 1500 coins and tokens. The list is too long for me to list it here, but if you would like more information on the crypto that it can hold, find out here.
Ease Of Use
This device is relatively small, and from what I read, it is slightly difficult to use. Its screen size is small, and you have two buttons to use to scroll through the coins and options. You can download an app from apple and android where you can bring up your information using your wallet on a computer. There is where you can swap tokens, stake tokens, buy and sell your crypto, plus a few other features.
Special Features
The Nano X is made from brush stainless steel and plastic. It resembles a USB stick. The device comes with Bluetooth capabilities theatre that is a good thing or bad is up to you to decide. But for me personally, I don’t want the possibility of someone hacking into my wallet with Bluetooth.
Price
The price on this wallet is more reasonable than the Modle T. So if you are starting, the Nano X will not break your bank, and you can use those extra savings to fill up your wallet.
The Nano X price comes in at $159CAD (about $125 USD)
- 1 hardware wallet,
- 1 USB cable
- 1 getting started leaflet
- 3 recovery sheets
- 1 keychain strap

Safepal Wallet
Safepal wallet is a Binance exchange hardware wallet. Binance is one of the biggest crypto exchanges in the world. So it’s no surprise that they came out with their own hardware wallet. Safepal also has a digital currency that was released on the exchange as of February 8, 2021. The crypto helps with exchange fees and transfers.
I have ordered a wallet not long ago and will be doing a full video review of it when I get it, but in the meantime, I will give you the information that you need to make an informed decision on the best hardware wallet.
Security
Binance is known for its tight security, so they have upped the protection to give you peace of mind for their wallets.
They only have one wallet that they sell for now, and that is the wallet that I will be reviewing. It is called Safepal S1 hardware Wallet.

The Best Crypto Hardware Wallet
Wow, that was a lot of information. So I review the top three best wallets on the market today. As you can see, they all have their own price points. My two favourites are the Model T and Safepal. I like the Trezor Model T because of the security and ease of use, plus the wallet looks nice. The support is always around to answer any questions that you have. But it was also my first hardware wallet.
Now that I have discovered the Safepal wallet, I think that I am a new fan because it can hold more crypto than the other wallets, it’s smaller, but the ease of use is better. I’m not sure how durable it is but, with something that holds your money, you will probably be careful with it anyway.
so in order of my opinion of the three wallets, I would recommend ( the links are clickable)
- SafePal S1 Wallet
- Trezor Model T Wallet
- Ledger Nano X Wallet (I probably will never get one)
Final Words Of Crypto Wallets
Wallets are great for keeping your cryptocurrency safe and secure offline, but please do remember that the passphrase is your key to your vault, and if you happen to lose your key, you lose your crypto. I suggest getting a seed capsule that you can find on Safepal’s website or Trezor’s website to keep it safe. This metal capsule holds your keys, and it is fireproof and waterproof. Please write down the seed phrase and bury it in a lockbox in a field (remember where it is) and/or rent out a safety deposit box in a bank and put the password in there.
Don’t ever show the seed key to anyone, as they can steal your crypto. If you ever break or lose your wallet, you can restore it with that phrase.

I don’t know much about Crypto but I am hearing more and more about it. My concern with Crypto, is it traceable? Like is Crypto a way for the government to keep tabs on your spending? I found the review to be informative and based on your comments I like the safepal as well. When in the review it talks about security, does it mean, from theft of the Crypto or wallet? or the government? or both? Are there different types of Crypto? Is there a Crypto worth more or less then the other? Looking forward to your answers!
Hello, Chris thanks for the comment. To answer your questions in order,
Some crypto is traceable.
But most are only traceable to a wallet address. Not your name. The only way for the government to track your dealings with crypto is through the exchanges, as most businesses require your information to comply with national authorities for money laundering.
When I talked about security, I meant for all parties: Criminals and the government. You don’t even have to give out your keys to your wallet, and no one can steal it from you unless they have your key phrase.
Yes, there are different cryptos. about 4000+ and they all do something different. (crypto is made for internet 3.0
As for the current price, Bitcoin is about $50k, and all others are below. Each coin has its own market cap, just like companies that are traded on the stock exchange.
I hope that answered your question. Feel free to ask more, as I love talking about cryptocurrency.
Hi Clifford. Very interesting article. Im jus starting my adventure with cryptocurrencies and posts like this are extremely useful. One of my biggest concerns was safety of my money, as you can hear every day about hackers attacks. I read before a bit about hardware wallets but to be fair with so man options on market it wasn’t easy to choose proper one. That’s why your review is so helpful and Im looking forward to test Safepal Wallet in practice (I love its design!)
What is has definitely been A valuable article for me. I have been looking into crypto wallet because I have been trying to store my crypto into some thing that is safe. I have probably not found some reliable information until I read in to your website. I appreciate this a lot, I also want to say that you have provided the most amount of detail compared to other websites out there.
Thank you for your kind words. I hope that you have figured out what wallet to use for your crypto.
if you don’t mind me asking. What wallet did you decide to order?
